Meet Mrs. Renee Lowe

My name is Renee Lowe and I am a sixth grade teacher here at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School. My husband Rick and I have one son, Gavin, who attends OLMC. I am extremely excited to be back, as I am a 1992 graduate of the school. My family has a long lineage here at OLMC. My son is the fourth generation to have attended the school. My grandfather, father, and I are all alumni, as well; my grandmother and aunt were both teachers here.
This is my sixteenth year teaching. I graduated from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale in 2001, and was employed as a teacher for the Regional Office of Education for four years. I then accepted a position as a fifth grade teacher at Washington Elementary in Marion, where I taught for nine years.

The opportunity to teach here at OLMC is extremely exciting to me, as I will have the opportunity to teach students to grow not only academically, but socially, emotionally, and spiritually, as well.

Meet Miss Flavia Velasquez
Hi! My name is Flavia Velasquez. I was born and raised in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. I was an English teacher for seven years in Honduras. Three years ago I moved to Carbondale, where I currently reside. I recently completed a Master’s degree with a double major in Spanish Literature and Linguistics. During the last three years, I have also taught several Spanish language classes at SIU-C.
I am fun, goal oriented and very energetic! I like to run and enjoy outdoor activities, but chocolate is my passion! I love to travel and constantly look for any opportunity that will allow me to learn about other languages, cultures and meet people! This year I am the 6th grade homeroom teacher and the Spanish teacher for 6, 7th and 8 grade. Learning languages is something I love and is becoming more and more important in our society today. I’m very proud to teach my native language and I am blessed to be part of this beautiful OLMC family now.
